The Safe and Caring SchoolsTM Program at Saint Charles School
Enhancing our Students' Social, Emotional, Psychological, Moral and Academic Development
October: Discovering Feelings by Katia S. Petersen, PhD
As we continue our Safe and Caring Schools program, our students will be taught about emotions, anger management, problem solving, assertiveness skills and accepting responsibility for their own actions. Children will learn about the power to make positive choices and to respond to conflict in appropriate ways.
No child can learn to care for others until they learn to care about themselves, their gifts and talents. Children are not born knowing how to accept individuality and uniqueness, or how to show caring and respect. These are skills they learn along the way as parents and caring adults around them give them unconditional love, ongoing support, guidance, and positive recognition.
Recognizing, understanding, and sharing feelings appropriately are key qualities children need to possess in order to get along with others. With the support of parents we can teach our students to become emotionally fit, which helps them face daily challenges in positive ways, as young students and later on in life.
For parents efforts to create a Safe and Caring Home in October we have the following tips to try this month:
- Set clear expectations about ways to treat each other as well as responsibilities
- Consistency and repetition is important as children grow up so they can internalize new skills and ideas.
- Model desirable behaviors, such as listening, respect, empathy, etc. on a regular basis.
- One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a sense of self-worth.
- Recognize their gifts, positive behavior and celebrate success.
Read, Read, Read! Here are some fun books to read as a family, that go with our October Safe and Caring Schools theme:
- Today was a Terrible Day by Patricia R. Giff
- Sometimes I Feel Like a Mouse by Jeane Modesitt
- The Dragon and the Mouse by Stephen Timm
- The Tar Pitt by Tor Seidler
