Bullying: Caring for Others by Katia S. Petersen, PhD

In a world where violence, harassment, and bullying have a daily presence, the ability to learn how to care and use the power of empathy is essential. Students who lack a sense of compassion, and acceptance of others have difficulty with impulse control, which may lead to unnecessary conflict. The wrong look, a side comment, an accidental push, or an unfortunate misunderstanding can quickly result in a major conflict. Without the skills of understanding others' point of view, the ability to communicate effectively and cooperation, the magnitude of negative conflict can be devastating.

The key is to have clear expectations both in school and at home that bullying behavior will not be tolerated and that students and adults will work together to create a Safe and Caring environment for everyone. Attention needs to be give both to the students who choose to bully as well as the students who are being bullied. With the right tools, practice and ongoing support you can make a difference in helping students to get along and to give them the life-long skills they deserve to possess.

During the month of January students will:

  1. Discuss the importance of compassion and acceptance.

  2. Learn about Bullying behaviors and Harassment, and the motives behind bullying.

  3. Learn how to deal with bullying in an appropriate and safe way.

  4. Practice their skills of empathy.
