December: Respect Yourself and Others

Belonging to a community means learning how to get along with others, finding a special place, and knowing what it is expected of you. It is essential for children to understand that as active participants of their school community they can help create a Safe and Caring environment. The more getting-along skills we teach children today, the better and more productive citizens they will be in the future.

For this month's theme: Respect Yourself and Others, topics we will focus on are:

  • Community
  • Respect
  • Manners
  • Communication Skills
  • Helping Others
  • Inclusion

Some Tips to Enforce this Month's Theme

Teaching the Golden Rule is a priority in order create a Safe and Caring environment. The first step is to learn about empathy, which is the ability to understand, predict, and relate to someone's feelings. To teach children to care about others, we must first teach them to care and value themselves.

Without the ability to empathize, children will have a very difficult time resolving problems in peaceful ways. If we cultivate empathy when our children are young, it will become natural for them. Model empathy and the Golden Rule as often as possible.
