WELCOME!

Our mission as MAYEP Scholars is to instill academic and social values in our youth through mentorship.  By motivating, inspiring, and believing in our mentees, it is our hope that they will look beyond the current adversities they face, discover new opportunities, and envision a brighter future.

The Mission Academic Youth Empowerment Program (MAYE program) is a student-run mentoring program for underserved middle-school children from the Mission District of San Francisco. Although serving a private catholic school, resources are limited and many students fall behind due to both lack of academic resources and social/personal obstacles.

The MAYE program consists of one-on-one mentoring from 3pm to 5pm every Friday during the school year. The first hour of mentoring consists of academic enrichment and tutoring. The second hour is dedicated to social activities (sports, art workshops, etc.) to help build a strong mentor-mentee relationship. Additionally, one Saturday each month, we coordinate an engaging events outside of the classroom, including an Open House with parents, visiting college campuses, community service events, fundraising, and an "End-Of-the-Semester" activity.

College-student mentors are committed to helping their individual mentee learn and conquer both their schoolwork and other obstacles they may face. Additionally, they foster a quality, trusting relationship with their mentee.  As mentors, they have a direct impact on a child's life by encouraging them to aim high and pursue higher education in the future.

For UC Berkeley students, we offer 1-2 units through the Asian American Studies department.  Also, because this is a student-run program, there are possible leadership positions after at least one semester of mentorship.
